This piece tells the story of Kyanga, my 3 times great-grandmother. She walked the country around Gangurang (Kangaroo Valley) and Gulaga Mountain, the birth place of all Yuin People. Our totem is Umbarra, the black duck, it is our protector and we are its protector. The land and the water are sacred to our people - we belong to eachother. You can see the footprints and the spirits of our ancestors on the land and the water in this painting. Our people share their stories in their yarning circles and those stories are then held in these sacred places. We are salt water people.
